Most people have at least one filling in their teeth. Fillings can be virtually unnoticeable if they are made with modern materials. In recent years modern materials have vastly improved and have become as durable as the older material amalgam. Amalgam is no longer acceptable for many people due to its grey colour, which could be noticeable when a person smiles widely.
Our centre no longer uses amalgam fillings. Amalgam has been replaced with white composite material, which is durable, suitably coloured and requires minimal dentin removal.
We can also replace your old amalgam fillings with composite (white) fillings. If your old and decrepit fillings are extensive, we will advise you to replace them with a porcelain inlay or onlay, which stabilizes your tooth for much longer than a composite or amalgam filling. Inlays and onlays also provide a more aesthetic appearance as they are custom-made in a dental laboratory.
Placing a filling requires only one visit to the dentist's office and the process depends on the size of the filling. The dentist first removes any tooth decay or re-shapes the chipped part of the tooth. The tooth is then primed with a special liquid which enables the material to bond with the tooth. The composite material is applied in several layers and is gradually reinforced with blue light. After the application of the material is finished, the filling is fitted to your oclusion and polished to be as smooth and shiny as your natural teeth.
