An inlay is a fitted dental filling made of porcelain in a dental laboratory. A dentist later permanently cements the inlay into the tooth.
Inlays are used for repairing teeth with existing extensive fillings or teeth that have been damaged by tooth decay or trauma. They are an excellent alternative to standard amalgam or composite fillings and more conservative than crownsas they require the removal of less tooth structure.
The porcelain inlays' advantage is in their durability, which is much better than that of composite fillings. An inlay's lifespan can reach up to 30 years. Onlays also strengthen teeth, which can not be said for amalgam and composite fillings.
The procedure of making an inlay normally requires two visits at the dentist. First the dentist removes all traces of caries (tooth decay) and old fillings from the tooth. The formed preparation is then carefully cleaned and finally formed before making a precise impression of the preparation and other teeth. At the end of the first visit, a temporary protective filling is made.
During the second visit, the dentist checks the insertability of the inlay before permanently cementing it onto the tooth. The dentist makes sure that the inlay is properly aligned with the patient's other teeth.
